Pulse and Blood Pressure

Todays topic for ICSC biology class 6 for Pulse and Blood Pressure .The link for part 1 of this chapter are - Blood Circulatory System in Humans and the Worksheets for Science related to this chapter. The links for part 2 of this chapter are -Structure and Function of a Heart    and the Worksheets for Science related to this topic.

Pulse and Blood Pressure

What is pulse?

The releasing of oxygenated blood into the arteries with a high pressure due to the contraction of left ventricle causes the wall of the arteries to stretch. The decrease in pressure also decreases the stretching of arteries due to the relaxation of the left ventricle. So a throbbing is felt with each heart beat due to the stretching and relaxing of arteries which is known as pulse.

Pulse can also be defined as the difference between the diastolic and systolic blood pressure.

What is blood pressure?

The pressure of blood inside the arteries is known as blood pressure. It is of two types -

1.Systolic pressure - The pressure produced due to the contraction of the left ventricle is known as systolic pressure.Blood is pushed into the pulmonary artery and aorta. In an adult person, it is about 120 mm Hg.

2.Diastolic pressure - It is the pressure within the arteries at the time of relaxation of the heart during the joint diastole. At this time, the ventricles blood from the auricles fill the ventricles. It is about 80 mm Hg in an adult person. A doctor uses a sphygmomanometer to measure the blood pressure.

How to keep the heart healthy?

1.Regular exercise helps to keep the heart fit and healthy . It helps in maintaining the blood pressure and protects us from heart diseases.

2.Brisk walking is also good for health.

3.To keep ourselves healthy,we should follow a healthy diet plan.

4.We should include fruits, vegetables and fibre rich food in our diet.

5.We should avoid fried food, cold drinks, junk food etc.

6.We should avoid eating too much salt.

7.Drink proper amount of water at least 7-8 glasses per day. If the colour of urine is clear then the amount of water in the body is proper. If its colour is dark then you need to drink more water.

8.You should get your body weight checked. It should be maintained properly according to your height and age.Keep your cholesterol in control.

9.To decrease the risk of heart diseases the use of lifts and escalators should be decreased.

10.Both smoking and second hand smoking are injurious to health.
