Blood Pressure Lower number is also equally important as the higher number. Blood pressure is the pressure that the blood exerts on the walls of the blood vessels. Blood pressure is important as it controls the circulation of blood throughout the body. This is our today's topic for notes of biology class 12 .

What is blood pressure lower number?
Blood pressure mainly consists of two numbers. These are -
1.Systolic Pressure - It stands for the higher number. It is the force exerted when the heart pumps the blood and the blood is forced to the systematic aorta by the contraction of the left ventricle. It is generally 120 mm Hg or 16 KPa in adults (Kilopascals).
2.Diastolic Pressure - It stands for the lower number. It is the pressure in the arteries when the heart relaxes during joint diastole and the coronary arteries are fed by blood. It is generally 80 mm Hg or 11.0 KPa in adults.
If the diastolic pressure becomes low, the coronary arteries get less blood and oxygen which is called Ischemia that leads to heart failure.
Factors that cause low diastolic pressure
1.In advanced age, the blood vessels lose elasticity and become stiffer which leads to high systolic pressure and low diastolic pressure.
2.Standing for a long period of time may cause low diastolic pressure as it leads to pooling of blood in your legs.
3.Blood vessels dilate due to alcohol consumption that causes low diastolic pressure, reduces the heart rate, causes the blood vessels to malfunction and may finally cause heart attack.
4.Deficiency of vitamin B complex.
5.Dehydration may also lower systolic and diastolic pressure.
6.Due to the loss of water in stools which is caused by the intake of certain medicines like ,
diuretics, narcotics tricyclic antidepressants, medicines taken for Parkinson's disease.
7.Some of the hormonal deficiencies may also cause low diastolic pressure.
8.Low diastolic pressure may also result from some allergies caused by medications or food.
The diastolic pressure that ranges between 90 -60 mm Hg is normal. But it is dangerous if it drops below 60 mm Hg.
Symptoms of low diastolic pressure
1.Fainting
2.Dizziness
3.Weakness
4.Difficulty in breathing
Treatment of low diastolic pressure
1.You should follow a healthy diet plan.
2.You should increase your salt intake but it should not increase above 1500 mg per day.
3.You should take some exercise daily.
4.Certain leg exercises are required if you get up after a long period of rest.
5.You should stop the intake of certain medicines if they are responsible for causing low diastolic pressure and should consult your doctor if you need their substitute.
6.Certain medications such as fludrocortisone may be advised by the doctor to control the situation.
