Kidneys Transplantation Cost

Kidneys transplantation cost depends upon various factors which are discussed below in this article. Sometimes due to a serious injury or accident the kidneys are damaged badly and can't be cured. This condition is known as chronic renal failure and can be treated only by Kidneys transplantation.

Kidneys Transplantation Cost

Kidney transplantation in India was done for the first time in December 1,1971 at Christian Medical College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu.

Generally, the immune system of our body protects us from anything foreign that enters the body. Similarly if before the kidneys transplantation surgery certain criteria are not followed, the immune system of the body doesn't accept it. This is called chronic rejection. In these cases, there occurs the development of nephrosclerosis in which lumen of the vessels of kidneys starts decreasing and the vascular intima starts to proliferate.

To avoid this situation, the selection of the donor should be done carefully by following all the medical guidelines. There are two types of donors. These are-

1.Living familial or blood related volunteer donors

2.Cadavers/Deseased donor

These criteria must be followed for the surgery to be successful.

1.Living blood related familial volunteer donors must be preferred over deseased donors.

2.Living volunteer donors should be physically fit for the purpose.

3.The blood group of the patient and the donor should be matching. However a person with blood group O can donate kidney either to a person with blood group A, B or AB.

4.The antigens of the HLA should be matched which is very important for a successful allograft.

5. If the immune system of the recipient attacks the kidney that seems foreign to it, then the immune system is suppressed or modified to handle that situation. This immuno-suppresive treatment is carried out with the help of Drug azathioprine (imuran) which is similar to mercaptopurine. This stops the formation of RNA, DNA or both.

Some of the patients should not take the treatment of kidneys transplantation-

1. suffering from serious heart disease

2.too old to handle the surgery

3.cancer patients or who have treated cancer recently

4.suffering from severe mental illness

5.any condition that is not suitable for the transplant or the medications to be taken after transplant.

Most common complications after kidney transplantation -

1.Rejection or failure of the kidney that is donated.

2.Infection

3.Clotting of blood

4.Ureter blockage which links the kidney and gall bladder

5.A disease can be transferred from the donor to the patient.

6.Heart attack

Kidney transplantation cost in India

There are many hospitals in India that offer the treatment of kidney transplantation.Kidneys transplantation cost depends upon the following factors -

1.Hospital fee

2.Fee of the surgeon

3.Type of facilities provided in the hospital

4.The age and condition of the patient

5.Lab tests performed

6.Complications that arise after the operation.

Generally the kidneys transplantation cost in India is Rs. 5-6 lakhs.

The average life expectancy of a person who received kidney from a living donor is 12-20 years while a person who received kidney from a deseased donor is 8-12 years.
