Chemical Changes Examples

Chemical Changes Examples include all the changes in which the original properties of matter are changed permanently.Everything around us is changing. There are two main types of changes i.e physical changes and chemical changes. Physical changes of matter are discussed in the first part of this chapter. In this second and last part, we will discuss the chemical changes of matter examples.

Chemical Changes Examples

What are chemical changes?

These are the changes that lead to the formation of new substances. The properties of the substance after the chemical change are different as it loses its original properties. This type of change is permanent and irreversible.

Chemical Changes Examples

1. Burning of wood - When wood is burnt, new substances are formed i.e ash and smoke. Their properties are different from wood. This change is irreversible as wood can't be obtained from ash and smoke.

2. Burning of paper - When paper is burnt, carbon dioxide, ash and water vapours are produced. All of these possess different properties than paper and this process is not reversible. So it is a chemical change.

3. Burning of magnesium - On burning a piece of magnesium ribbon, a white powder like substance known as magnesium oxide is produced.

4. Burning of a candle - A candle melts on burning. This melting of candle is a physical process as the melted candle can be changed back into wax. But burning is an chemical process as it produces new substances i.e carbon dioxide and moisture that passes into the atmosphere. This is irreversible as we can't get back the candle from this moisture and carbon dioxide.

5. Rusting of Iron - Due to rusting, the grey solid iron is changed into reddish brown powder like substance that loses its property of magnetism. Rusting is a chemical change as the properties of iron differs from the properties of rust.

6. Souring of milk - Changing of milk into curd is an irreversible change as we can't obtain milk from curd. The properties of milk are different from curd as milk is a liquid while curd is semi-solid. Milk is sweet while curd is sour. So, it is a chemical change.
