ICSC biology class 6

Todays topic for ICSC biology class 6  is . Different animals undergo different changes in their body and behaviour in order to adjust to their environment that is necessary for their survival. This chapter explains Adaptations in Animals .The link for 1st part of this chapter that includes adaptations in plants is : https://lessonstobelearneda-z.blogspot.com/2022/04/adaptations-in-plants-and-animals.html

Adaptations

Aquatic animals - Animals that spend most of their time in water are known as aquatic animals. For example - fish such as dolphin, shark etc.

What adaptations are found in aquatic animals?

1.They have a streamlined body that helps them to swim in water.

2.They breathe with the help of gills.

3.Mucus and water proof scales that cover their body prevent them from decaying.

4.Their fins help them to swim in water.

5.They change the direction while swimming with the help of their tail.

6.They lack sweat glands, oil glands and hair.

7.Some of them have cuticle, shell on their body.

8.Air bladder or air bubble present in some fish help them in buoyancy.

Terrestrial animals - Animals that spend most of their time on land are known as terrestrial animals. These may be runners, climbers, borrowers or diggers. For example - lion, cow, dog, rat, snakes etc.

What adaptations are found in terrestrial animals?

1.They possess pentadactyl for walking and running.

2.Their muscles are developed very well for walking or running. For example - Lion, deer, dog etc. Their muscles are also well adapted for crawled. For example - snakes, lizards etc.

3.Burrowing animals such as rats, moles etc have a modified head.

4.They breathe with the help of lungs.

Desert animals - Animals that live in desert are known as desert animals. For example - camel etc. In the deserts, there is shortage of water and temperature is very high during daytime.

What adaptations are found in desert animals?

1.Small animals such as scorpions, rats, snakes etc dig burrows and rest in them during daytime as they find them to be cool and comfortable.

2.These animals move out from their holes at night in search of food. Their body is adapted to prevent the loss of water by perspiration.

3.Camel which is known as the ship of desert can live without water and food for about 10 days.It conserves water by sweating very little. It excretes also very little and very little water is found in its faeces. It utilizes the fat stored in its hump in the absence of food.It has a very low breathing rate. Its large and fleshy soles help it to walk on the hot and slippery sand. It has long eye lashes and its nostrils are muscular that help to protect it from wind - blown sand.

Mountainous animals - These are the animals that live in mountains. For example - mountain goat, brown bear, mountain gorilla etc.

What adaptations are found in animals that live on mountains?

1.They have a thick layer of fur on their body that protects them from cold.

2.A thick layer of fat under their skin protects them from cold and give them insulation from cold.

3.They possess strong hooves that help them in climbing rocky mountain slopes.

4.They have small nose and ears to prevent the heat loss from the body.

Aerial animals - Animals that spend most of their time in air are known as aerial animals. For example - birds, bats etc.

What adaptations are found in aerial animals?

1.Their streamlined body helps them in flying against the resistance of air.

2.They have strong flight muscles.

3.Their bones are light and hollow from inside.

4.Their forelimbs get modified into wings . To balance their body weight, their hindlimbs are shifted in forward.

5.Their bones lack bone marrow.

6.Air sacs are present in the lungs that increase their breathing efficiency and the body becomes lighter.
