Todays topic for Chemistry Class 6 include Introduction to Chemistry Laboratory and Applications of Chemistry. This chapter has two parts. The link for part 1 of this chapter is : https://lessonstobelearneda-z.blogspot.com/2022/04/basics-for-chemistry.html
Chemistry has played a great role in making our life easy. It has a wide range of applications in our day to day life. Some of these applications are discussed below -
1.Food
*Food eaten by us is a mixture of chemicals.
*Certain chemicals or preservatives are added in the food that has to be kept for a long period of time such as sodium benzoate, salicylic acid, sodium chloride (common salt) etc.
*The major food components consist of complex chemicals.
*Chemistry also plays a great role in the process of food processing.
*Vinegars is used in jams, pickles, sauces etc as a food preservative.
2.Agriculture
*The growth and development in the field of chemistry has brought progress and revolution in food production and agriculture.
*Farmers are able to grow good quality crops with a comparatively high yield with the help of fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and insecticides.
3.Cosmetics
*Chemistry has provided a large number of cosmetic products such as nailpaints, foundation, perfume, face powder etc.
For example - Talcum powder that provides a smooth and glossy appearance to the skin is composed of hydrated magnesium silicate.
4.Clothing
Chemistry also plays a major role in providing us clothes that we wear.
*The harvest of the cotton balls that is obtained after it is cultivated in the fields needs to be processed in the industries. Certain chemicals are used in this process to obtain man-made fibres such as rayon, nylon, terylene etc which are used for the production of clothes and apparels.
5.Medicines
*To prevent the spread of diseases like cholera, malaria etc certain disinfectants and detergents are used to clean the surroundings and to maintain good sanitary conditions.
*For the maintainence of proper hygiene, certain soaps, shampoos, shaving creams, bathing gels etc are available. A number of mosquito repellents, antiseptics, hand sanitizers are available to protect us from infection.
6.Industries
*Chemistry has played a great role in the development of various industries. Industries are established for the manufacture of various chemicals such as paints, dyes, soaps, fertilizers, pesticides, drugs etc.
Chemistry Laboratory
Chemistry laboratory is a place where various experiments are performed by using different types of apparatus and chemicals.
Chemistry laboratory apparatus/Chemistry Laboratory Equipment Name
1.Test Tube - It is a cylindrical glass tube which is used to heat substances and observe their reactions.
2.Beaker - It is a glass container made up of glass which is used to mix, stir and heat substances. It has a beak shaped mouth so it is known as a beaker.
3.Conical Flask - It is a cone shaped glass flask used to mix and stir substances.
4.Round-bottom Flask - This type of glass flask has a round bottom and is used to heat substances.
5.Flat-bottom Flask - This type of glass flask has a flat bottom. It is not used to heat liquids. It is only used to mix and stir liquids.
6.Measuring cylinder - This glass cylinder is used for measuring liquids.
7.Funnel - It is also made up of glass and is available in many different sizes. It is used in the process of filtration and is used to pour liquids into those vessels that have a narrow mouth.
8.China Dish - It is used to heat evaporating substances.
9.Wire Gauze - It is a rectangular in shape and is made up of thin wires. It helps to heat the glass apparatus evenly and prevents it from breakage.
10.Tripod Stand - It made up of iron and consists of three legs. It helps in supporting other apparatus.
11.Bunsen Burner - It is a long tube used for heating.
